Ireland and Portugal representatives show support for Palestine at Eurovision final
At the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest held in Malmö, Sweden, Irish representative Bambie Thug and Portuguese representative iolanda included messages of support for Palestine in their final performances.
In footage shared on social media, it was noted that Bambie Thug appeared for the final performance with the word "ceasefire" written on their face, a message previously disallowed by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
Bambie Thug performed their song "Doomsday Blue" with the word for "ceasefire" written on their face in Ogham, an ancient Celtic script.
At the end of the performance, the Irish singer stated, "Love will always triumph over hate."
It remains to be seen how the EBU will react to this action, which it had previously blocked.
SUPPORT FOR PALESTINE FROM PORTUGAL'S EUROVISION REPRESENTATIVE
Representing Portugal in the contest, iolanda shouted "Peace will prevail" after singing her song "Grito."
iolanda featured motifs from the Palestinian keffiyeh on her fingernails.
Bambie Thug had announced that they filed a complaint with the EBU against Israel's broadcaster KAN due to its actions toward them, emphasizing that Israel should no longer be allowed to participate in the contest.
The singer, who took the stage in the first semi-final held on May 7, had confirmed that they were forced by the EBU to remove the phrases "Free Palestine" and "ceasefire," which they had written on their body in the Ogham script to show support for Palestine.
