Ireland's UNIFIL reaction to Israel: 'Not accidental, but direct...'

Clancy spoke to the Irish public broadcaster RTE regarding Israel's attack on UNIFIL positions and the situation of Irish soldiers serving in UNIFIL.

When asked about claims that Israel hit UNIFIL positions unintentionally while firing at Hezbollah targets, Clancy said, "I don't believe that under these circumstances."

Stating that the UNIFIL observation tower hit by tank fire was a small target, Clancy remarked, "To hit a small target like an observation tower with a tank, you have to deliberately aim and fire directly. From a military perspective, this is not an accidental act, but a direct one."

Clancy expressed that the strategic goal underlying Israel's attack on UNIFIL positions is unclear, adding, "This is a very clear and catastrophic violation. Their actions are reckless, and there must be accountability for what has happened. Under no circumstances can an attack on UN Peacekeepers be tolerated."

Pointing out that the presence of UNIFIL and Irish soldiers in Lebanon is important for documenting events and holding those responsible accountable, Clancy noted that this is lacking in Gaza.

Clancy also reported that the Irish soldiers stationed in Lebanon as part of UNIFIL are in good condition.
