Irish President Michael D. Higgins said in an interview with a local newspaper today that he suffered a mild stroke in February and was treated in the hospital for a week as a result.
In his interview, Higgins stated, "I am better now. It was a type of mild stroke, and it did not affect my cognitive abilities. It only affected my simple motor skills. I can now fully use my left hand. However, the stroke exacerbated my back problems."
A statement from the President's office noted that Higgins had experienced a mild weakness and is expected to make a full recovery.
It was noted that President Higgins, who turned 83 last week, returned to his duties after being discharged from the hospital.
Higgins' second term is expected to end next year.
