Is Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau preparing to resign?

Claims that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will resign as leader of the ruling Liberal Party have made a significant impact. According to a report by The Globe and Mail, citing anonymous sources, Trudeau is preparing to step down due to increasing dissatisfaction within his party and low public support.

The report states that Trudeau plans to announce his resignation at a time of his own choosing in order to "avoid the impression of being removed from office." In this context, it is alleged that Trudeau will announce his decision to the public before January 8.

NAMES TO REPLACE TRUDEAU ON THE AGENDA

Names that could replace Trudeau within the Liberal Party have also begun to be discussed. Potential candidates include Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne, and former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney. It is also noted that Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc could serve as interim leader.

CALLS FOR RESIGNATION ARE INCREASING

Twenty-four of the Liberal Party's 153 members of parliament had called for Trudeau to resign by October 28, 2024. The MPs argue that a change in leadership is necessary due to the risk of defeat in the next election.

Trudeau, despite the calls for resignation, had previously stated that he would not step down as leader of his party and would run in the next election. However, the decline in public opinion polls and the unrest within the party are increasing the pressure on Trudeau.
