Israel declares emergency over tsunami risk: Ministries instructed to 'be prepared'

The Deputy Head of Israel's National Security Council held an emergency meeting regarding a potential tsunami that could occur in the event of a volcanic eruption on Santorini.

Representatives from administrative units, including the Ministry of National Security, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the Israel Police, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended the meeting. As a result of the meeting, officials instructed various government ministries to be prepared for the possibility that Israel could face a tsunami wave.

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is continuing its preparations to minimize potential damage to electricity generation infrastructure, address possible impacts on desalination plants, and evacuate employees if necessary.

Local residents and tourists are leaving Santorini Island due to the possibility of a volcanic eruption. So far, at least 11 thousand people have left the region.

EARTHQUAKES IN SANTORINI

Thousands of people have been evacuated from the region following earthquakes felt in the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea, particularly on the Greek tourist island of Santorini. Greek seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos stated that the ongoing seismic activity in the region is attempting to break the fault line but is encountering strong resistance, warning that more earthquakes could occur in the area.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Miçotakis has scheduled a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection for tomorrow to assess the earthquakes in the region and determine whether additional measures are necessary. Emphasizing that they are closely monitoring developments, Miçotakis called on the public to remain calm.

Santorini and its surroundings are located on the Aegean Volcanic Arc, making it a critical point in terms of volcanic activity. The activity in the region, which is 180 km from Muğla and 250 km from İzmir, could also affect the Turkish coast.
