Israel held Alzheimer's patient in Gaza for 2 months, alleging she was an "unlawful combatant"
It has been reported that Israeli forces held an 82-year-old woman with Alzheimer's in Gaza in prison for 2 months, alleging that she was an "unlawful combatant."
According to a report in the Haaretz newspaper, an Alzheimer's patient named Fahamiya Khalidi was detained by Israeli forces at the beginning of December at a school where she had taken refuge after leaving her home in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood during Israeli bombardment.
HELD FOR 2 MONTHS
The report stated that Khalidi, who was detained in Gaza, was held for 2 months at Damon Prison in northern Israel and was released on January 19 along with 5 other women who were classified as "unlawful combatants."
While a request by a lawyer from the Israeli organization Physicians for Human Rights to meet with Khalidi on December 27 was rejected by the prison administration, the elderly woman was released following a subsequent appeal.
It was noted that the caregiver who looked after Khalidi, whose children live abroad, was also detained and is still being held in an Israeli prison.
According to an account from a Gazan woman who was held in the same prison and later released, Khalidi, who had difficulty walking and used a wheelchair, was taken to the prison infirmary at times with her hands handcuffed.
It was stated that Khalidi was not the only elderly and sick woman in the prison.
TREATMENT FOR THE SICK WOMAN HAS BEGUN
One of the released Gazans stated that 6 Gazan women and 18 men were taken near the Kerem Shalom Border Crossing and that Israeli soldiers opened fire on them as they began to move away.
It was reported that Khalidi, who was sent to an UNRWA tent on the Palestinian side of the Kerem Shalom crossing where released prisoners are received, was then sent to a hospital in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, where her treatment has begun.
