Israeli press: Further dismissals may occur
The Israeli press has claimed that Netanyahu will also dismiss Israeli Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi and Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar.
In a report based on sources close to the Prime Minister, the Israeli news site Walla claimed that Netanyahu will also dismiss Israeli Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi and Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar.
While Netanyahu has sole authority to replace the head of the Shin Bet, the authority to dismiss or appoint the chief of general staff belongs to the defense minister.
"SELLING OUT ISRAEL'S SECURITY AND THE IDF'S FIGHTERS"
Opposition Leader Yair Lapid described Netanyahu's decision regarding Gallant as "madness," stating, "Netanyahu is selling out Israel's security and the IDF's fighters for his shameful political survival. The far-right government prefers draft dodgers over those who serve." Lapid called on his party's supporters and "all Zionist patriots to take to the streets tonight to protest."
"A PRIME MINISTER CAN ALSO BE REPLACED"
Yisrael Beiteinu party leader and former Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman criticized the dismissal of Gallant, saying that Netanyahu is leading the country toward a "banana republic." Liberman stated, "Instead of prioritizing the country's security and the welfare of its citizens and soldiers, the Prime Minister decided to fire the defense minister to satisfy shameful political needs and initiate a new round of political appointments. If a defense minister can be replaced in the middle of a war, a prime minister can also be replaced."
