Furthermore, noting that ISIS still poses a significant threat in Syria, it was emphasized that lifting the ban on HTS would encourage the Damascus administration's participation in anti-ISIS efforts and reduce the threat to the UK.
The UK government stated that it supports closer cooperation with Syria to eliminate the chemical weapons program of the ousted Assad regime. Shara's commitment to definitively destroying these weapons was welcomed by the UK.
In April, the UK lifted sanctions on 12 institutions and organizations in Syria, including the ministries of Defense and Interior.
