Italy has taken the long-awaited step: New visa application has begun

Following the COVID-19 period, the continuation of remote work policies has led to a need for different types of visas for "digital nomads" who work outside their own countries and frequently change locations.

In Italy, the new visa for remote workers, which was approved in March 2022, has been authorized after more than two years. Following this implementation, citizens of countries that are not members of the European Union (EU) will now be able to apply for a one-year digital nomad visa.

With the digital nomad visa, which came into effect last week after being debated for years by Italian lawmakers, remote workers will be able to live in Italy for a period of 1 year.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Those who will apply for the visa must be able to work remotely as self-employed individuals, in collaboration with a company, or as an employee of a company.

Visa applicants must earn three times the minimum wage to be exempt from health expenses. This corresponds to just under 28 thousand Euros or approximately 30 thousand 400 dollars annually.

Other requirements to obtain the visa include being covered by health insurance for the duration of the stay, proof of accommodation, and proof that they have worked remotely elsewhere or have been digital nomads for at least six months previously.

Furthermore, although the digital nomad visa is only valid for one year, it can be renewed and family members can be included. On the other hand, it is stated that visas may be denied for individuals who have been convicted of a crime within the last five years.

WHEN WILL APPLICATIONS START?

As of April 4, applications for Italy's digital nomad visa have begun to be accepted. Those who wish to apply must make an appointment in person at an Italian consulate in the country where they reside.

For the application, documents such as a valid passport, employment certificate, proof of income, health insurance, proof of accommodation in Italy, and a criminal record certificate are required.

Following the approval of the visa, eight days are given from the moment of arrival in Italy to apply for a residence permit, also known as a permesso di soggiorno.
