Steps were taken in Italy on Wednesday toward legalizing chemical castration. With a proposal from lawmakers in the government coalition, parliament approved the establishment of a committee that could draft a bill regarding the 'treatment of violent sex offenders with androgen-blocking drugs.'
According to the approved bill, the treatment will be 'voluntary' and 'reversible.' The lawmakers who proposed the measure stated that the goal is to 'help those with the potential to reoffend.'
According to the proposal by the coalition partner League party, convicted sex offenders could receive a sentence deferral in exchange for undergoing 'hormone blockade' treatment.
Meloni said earlier this month that security would be a 'priority' over the next few months.
League party leader Matteo Salvini wrote the following about the decision on the X platform:
'A victory for the League! Another important step in our historic fight for justice and common sense: zero tolerance for rapists and pedophiles.'
