Japan will send 37 million dollars in humanitarian aid to Myanmar, where shortages of food and daily necessities have emerged following the military coup.
Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko noted in her statement that the military coup in the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar has entered its 3rd year.
Stating that humanitarian conditions in Myanmar are deteriorating, Minister Kamikawa reported that 18.6 million people across the country are "in need of humanitarian aid."
Noting that they are deeply saddened by the situation, Kamikawa stated that they would send 37 million dollars in humanitarian aid to Myanmar, covering food and medical supplies.
It was reported that the humanitarian aid would be delivered through the United Nations (UN) World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).
WHAT HAPPENED?
Following allegations of fraud in the 2020 general elections in Myanmar and rising political tension in the country, the military seized power on February 1, 2021. The army had detained many ruling party officials.
Opponents of the coup began organizing demonstrations; as a result of the military opening fire on protesters, dozens of people were arrested, injured, or lost their lives.
