Jihadist groups seize another location in Syria

The provincial center of Daraa in southern Syria has fallen under the control of jihadist groups clashing with Bashar al-Assad's forces. The jihadist groups launched an operation against Assad's forces and captured numerous settlements in the rural area. One of these is Daraa, which was the site where the popular uprisings first began.

Moving against Assad forces in the southern province of Daraa, jihadist groups advanced by capturing numerous settlements and military outposts in the countryside.

Following intense clashes, the jihadist groups also took control of the provincial center from Assad's forces.

In the Syrian civil war, which broke out after the movements that began in 2011 with the public's demands for freedom were met with violent suppression by Assad, the city of Daraa holds historical significance as one of the birthplaces of the resistance against Assad.

Public movements in Daraa, southern Syria, began on March 15, 2011, when a group of students wrote on a school wall, "Oh doctor (Bashar al-Assad), now it is your turn."
