Judge Kathleen Ryan, who served in Detroit, was removed from her position after a court employee submitted audio recordings to authorities in which she used anti-gay slurs and called Black people lazy.
Oakland County Probate Judge Kathleen Ryan was removed from her duties on August 27 due to misconduct, the exact nature of which was not specified. A person working in the same court who secretly recorded Ryan's conversations announced that they had reported Ryan by submitting the phone recordings to the authorities.
Edward Hutton, who reported Ryan by recording the audio, stated the following in an interview with WXYZ-TV:
'I just want to do the right thing... I want to protect my job and do it in peace. And I want the people who come to the court in Oakland County to be treated fairly, and for there to be a truly impartial judge here.'
Judge Ryan did not make any statement to the press. However, her attorneys Gerald Gleeson and Thomas Cranmer stated:
'We look forward to exonerating Judge Ryan in court.'
In the phone recordings, Ryan uses an anti-gay slur against David Coulter, the county's highest-ranking elected official, who is gay. She also refers to Black people in the US as lazy.
'I AM NOT SYSTEMICALLY RACIST. I AM A NEW TYPE OF RACIST'
The following statement used by Ryan in the audio recordings is particularly notable:
'I am not systemically racist. I am a new type of racist.'
Hutton said he sent the recordings in August to Coulter, Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Elizabeth Clement, and other officials. Chief Probate Judge Linda Hallmark subsequently placed Ryan on paid administrative leave while she is being investigated by the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission.
Ryan's father, James Ryan, was a state and federal judge. Her brother, Daniel Ryan, also serves as a judge in another district.
