Khamenei ordered a direct attack on Israel at that meeting: Retaliation claim
Citing Iranian sources, the US newspaper The New York Times claimed that Supreme Leader Khamenei would 'move beyond proxy forces' in retaliating against Israel for the assassination of Haniyeh in Tehran.
Following Israel's killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, it has been claimed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who stated, "We consider it our duty to avenge the blood spilled on Iranian soil," has ordered a direct attack on Israel.
The US newspaper The New York Times (NYT) reported, citing Iranian sources, that Khamenei, who has the final say on all matters in Iran, ordered military officials to strike Israel directly in retaliation for the Haniyeh assassination.
CLAIM LEAKED FROM THE SUPREME NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL MEETING
According to the report, Khamenei gave the order at an emergency meeting of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, which he chaired this morning following the Haniyeh assassination.
The NYT stated that it based its claim on three Iranian officials, two of whom are from the Revolutionary Guards.
This means that Iranian forces would carry out a direct retaliation against Israel, going beyond the Tehran-backed Axis of Resistance, which includes Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and the Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq.
