King Charles transfers senior military role to Prince William

King Charles has transferred the rank of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps, which he held for 32 years, to his eldest son, Prince William.

The King, who arrived by helicopter at the Army Aviation Centre in Hampshire, met with Prince William for the official handover ceremony of the military title.

In an impromptu speech, the King said that "it is a moment of great sadness" after 32 years. He spoke of his "great admiration" for the Army Air Corps' work in Iraq and Afghanistan, and then confirmed that his eldest son was taking over the role.

Prince William previously served as an RAF search and rescue pilot, having spent three years at RAF Valley in Anglesey.
