Kosovo seeks Germany's support for Council of Europe membership
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has requested support from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his country's full membership in the Council of Europe, which is headquartered in Strasbourg, France.
In a written statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, it was stated that Kurti and Scholz discussed interstate relations and Kosovo's application for membership in the Council of Europe during a phone call.
It was reported that Kurti emphasized that accepting his country, which "possesses the most advanced European framework for the rights and protection of non-majority communities, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights," as a member of the Council would be the right decision.
The statement noted that Kurti requested support from his German counterpart for his country to become a full member of the Council.
ABOUT THE PROCESS
Kosovo, which declared its unilateral independence from Serbia in 2008, officially applied for membership in the Council of Europe on May 12, 2022, following Russia's expulsion from the Council.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) approved a report on April 16 recommending that Kosovo be admitted as a full member of the Council "without preconditions."
The final decision regarding Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe is expected to be made by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in May.
