Kylian Mbappe's reaction to the 'far-right': We cannot leave the country in the hands of these people

Considered one of the best footballers in the world, Kylian Mbappe has once again called on the French people to go to the polls to vote against the far-right ahead of the second round of the early general elections to be held in his country on July 7.

Speaking to the press ahead of the France-Portugal quarter-final match to be played this evening at EURO 2024 in Germany, Mbappe made an assessment regarding the early general elections in his country.

Mbappe, who is also the captain of the French national team, described the results of the first round of the election held on June 30, in which the far-right National Rally (RN) party came in first with around 33 percent of the vote, as a 'catastrophe'.

"WE CANNOT LEAVE THE COUNTRY IN THE HANDS OF THESE PEOPLE"

Calling on the French people once again to vote against the far-right following the first-round election results, Mbappe stated, "We need to go out and vote more than ever. This is truly urgent," and referring to the anti-immigrant far-right RN candidates, he said, "We cannot leave the country in the hands of these people."

The French star had also expressed his opposition to "extreme and divisive ideas" before the first round of voting on June 30, calling on French youth to vote against the far-right in the elections, which he described as a "critical moment" for his country.

Bardella, who became the new leader of the racist movement by taking over the National Front from Le Pen, reacted to Mbappe's words and said that the star footballer should 'respect everyone's vote'.

ELECTIONS IN FRANCE

The far-right RN, which has continued to increase its votes in the last 3 elections in France, most recently placed first by a wide margin in the EP elections on June 9 with 31.4 percent of the vote, upon which President Emmanuel Macron decided to dissolve the parliament and go to early elections, with the first round on June 30 and the second round on July 7.

On June 30, when the first round of the election was held, the far-right National Rally (RN) party and its allies came in first with 33.15 percent of the vote, gathering the votes of approximately 10 million voters, which corresponds to one-third of the valid votes. In the first round, the New Popular Front alliance formed by left-wing parties placed second with 28 percent, while Macron's "Together for the Republic" alliance took third place with 20 percent of the vote.
