Kyrgyzstan is changing its flag

The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan, has voted to approve the change of the national flag, which had been criticized by many, including President Sadyr Japarov.

A 'FLAG' DECISION AFTER 31 YEARS

The law, which was accepted in the first vote, changes the design to straighten the sun rays that were likened to a sunflower on the flag.

The flag, adopted in 1992 after the Central Asian country gained its independence from the Soviet Union, depicts a yellow sun with 40 rays on a red background, representing the top of a traditional Kyrgyz yurt tent.

However, these rays, which are one of the main elements of the flag, have recently been criticized for being likened to a sunflower.

BLAMED FOR THE COUNTRY'S INABILITY TO GET BACK ON ITS FEET

The sunflower, which symbolizes "disloyalty" and "servitude" in Kyrgyz culture, is used to describe a person who is "willing to change their allegiance for personal gain," "indecisive," and "servile."

Following comments by several parliamentarians in September comparing the rays to a sunflower, President Japarov also made a statement, saying, "There is a common view in our society that our flag looks like a sunflower, and this is one of the reasons why the country cannot get back on its feet."
