Leyen: What we need is a path toward lasting peace

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen issued a congratulatory message regarding the ceasefire expected to take effect between Lebanon and Israel.

In a statement on her social media account, Leyen said, "I welcome the 10-day ceasefire announced between Israel and Lebanon, brokered by US President Donald Trump. This is a relief, as the conflict has already caused too many casualties."

Emphasizing her hopes for achieving lasting peace in the region, Leyen stated, "What we need now is not just a temporary pause, but a path toward lasting peace."

Underlining that Europe will continue its support for Lebanon during this process, Leyen said, "Europe will continue to call for full respect for Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity. We will also continue to support the people of Lebanon through significant humanitarian aid."

Trump had announced the ceasefire decision

In his statement regarding the Israel-Lebanon contacts, Trump reported that he had held talks with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump noted that both leaders had agreed to a 10-day ceasefire that would take effect tonight at 00:00 Turkish time.
