Libyan court rules presidential election invalid

In a statement issued by the South Tripoli Court of Appeal, it was announced that the appeal regarding the High Council of State presidential election had been accepted.

The court ruled that the session held for the High Council of State presidential election was invalid and ordered a stay of execution on the decision regarding the election result.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Takala, one of the two candidates competing in the final round of the election, stated in a press release that he respects the court's decision and will invite Council members to a new session shortly.

DUE TO INVALID BALLOT DISPUTE

In the High Council of State presidential election held on August 6, incumbent President Mohamed Takala and Khaled al-Mishri advanced to the second round, where al-Mishri received 69 votes and Takala received 68.

Because one ballot had the name 'Mohamed Takala' written on the back instead of the front, a president could not be determined in the election result, and Takala announced that he would take the matter to court.

Takala had taken the process to court on the grounds that two people who were not Council members had voted in the election and that one vote against him had been counted as invalid.

Al-Mishri had also announced that he had been elected as the legitimate president of the Council and would not relinquish his right, arguing that the Supreme Court had no involvement in this matter and that the issue should be resolved within the Council through the relevant committees.
