Macron announces 12-day state of emergency

The death toll from demonstrations against a bill aimed at changing the voting system in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia has risen to 4. It was announced that 1 security officer lost their life during the protests.

French President Emmanuel Macron has declared a state of emergency in response to the escalating violence.

President Macron praised the efforts of security forces, expressed solidarity with the people of New Caledonia, and emphasized their determination to put an end to the violence.

A statement from the Élysée Palace indicated that the decision for a state of emergency was made following a meeting between Macron and the National Defense and Security Council.

WILL LAST 12 DAYS

In New Caledonia, the state of emergency will remain in effect for 12 days, starting from 20:00 local time. Under the state of emergency, freedom of movement and assembly will be restricted.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced at an inter-ministerial crisis committee meeting that the social media app TikTok would be banned and that the military would be deployed to secure ports and airports.

In New Caledonia, more than 200 businesses and over 50 vehicles have been set on fire during the escalating violence over the past two days, while more than 130 people have been detained. Authorities reported that more than 60 security personnel have been injured in the violent incidents.
