Macron: Europe may need to talk to Putin if the US fails
French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that if US efforts to achieve peace in the Russia-Ukraine war fail, Europe will need to seek ways to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
French President Emmanuel Macron answered questions from members of the press following the European Union (EU) Leaders' Summit held in Brussels, the capital of Belgium.
Direct dialogueIn response to a questionregarding whether it would bebeneficial to speakwith him, Macron noted that there arealreadythose who are in contact with Putin, and therefore, it would be in the interest of Europeans and Ukrainians to resumea dialogue with Putin in a manner consistent with proper procedure.he said. Macron added, "While we are talking amongourselves, others might sit down to negotiatewith the Russians alone.
This is notoptimal. It would bewonderful if a strong and lasting peace were established, along with the necessary security guarantees. Otherwise, Europeanswill need to in the coming weeks, a full they will need to find ways andmeans to initiate a new comprehensivedialogue with Russia in a transparent manner," he stated.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has notyet commentedon the matter.
