Maduro expected to be held at Metropolitan Detention Center
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is expected to be held at a high-security facility in Brooklyn, New York, while awaiting trial.
Although the detention facility is specifically equipped to hold high-risk individuals, it remains the only federal correctional center for the country's largest city, following the Bureau of Prisons' closure of its Manhattan complex after Jeffrey Epstein's suicide.
Famous cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán's where he was held before being sentenced to life in prison, the Metropolitan Detention Center, also Sean “Diddy” Combs, Ghislaine Maxwell, R. Kelly and Sam Bankman-Fried also temporarily hosted figures such as.
Special measures were taken at the facility to house El Chapo, who had escaped from prisons in Mexico a few years earlier. Sinaloa Cartel's co-founder Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada García was also held at this facility before pleading guilty to the related charges.
Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether the U.S. would take the risk of holding the president of another country in such a densely populated metropolitan area; this situation brings with it many security concerns that extend beyond just the inmates and detention staff.
U.S. President Donald Trump, stated that Maduro is on board the USS Iwo Jima en route to New York to stand trial in Manhattan on drug and weapons charges.
