Maduro's BRICS statement: 'We will be a member soon'

Participating in a television program in Venezuela, Maduroannounced that his country aims to become a full member of BRICS in the near future.

Stating that the 'old colonial world' will come to an end, Maduro noted that he sees the emergence of a new 'multipolar world' as inevitable.

Speaking to the Venezolana de Television channel, President Maduro, "We will leave behind the 'old colonial world' characterized by 'occupations, genocides, wars, and a superiority complex' with the consolidation of BRICS," he said.

The Venezuelan leader described the BRICS group, which initially consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and has recently expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, as the 'future of humanity'.

Maduro "We will soon be members of BRICS," he said, adding that he expects his country's full membership to be approved at the BRICS summit to be held in Russia this coming October.

According to the  International Monetary Fund (IMF), BRICS currently accounts for 36% of global GDP in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP); for the G7 group, this rate is just over 30%.
