Malaysia is opening its doors to visitors for "dark tourism," defined as travel to places associated with death, tragedy, and dark events from the past.
Speaking to the MalayMail, Manoharan Periasamy, Director General of Tourism Malaysia under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, announced his country's new strategy regarding "dark tourism," which has recently gained international attention.
Believing that dark tourism is a trend that will contribute significantly to the preservation of Malaysia's history and heritage, Manoharan said, "We are committed to further developing this sector and making Malaysia a leading hub for dark tourism."
BUILT IN THE 1900S
Stating that this will include places such as Kellie's Castle, built in the 1900s and the subject of various legends, and the Penang War Museum, described as the largest war museum in Southeast Asia, Manoharan noted that it will allow visitors to explore periods of struggle, resistance, and transformation.
Dark tourism refers to the trend of visiting places associated with death, tragedy, historical pain, and disasters.
