Mar Galcerán becomes Spain's first parliamentarian with Down syndrome
Spain has elected Mar Galcerán, who is determined to remove barriers for individuals with disabilities, as a member of the regional parliament.
Mar Galcerán, who has been involved in politics since the age of 18, has steadily risen in her political career, which she began with Spain's conservative People's Party.
In May, Galcerán secured a spot on the People's Party candidate list for the regional elections held in Eastern Spain and subsequently won a seat in the Corts Valencianes, representing that region.
According to Spain's Down syndrome federation, Galcerán may be the first person in Europe to join a regional or national parliament.
