Martial law crisis in South Korea: New decision for arrested Yoon Suk Yeol

It has been reported that Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from the presidency and arrested in South Korea, has been placed in a single-person cell.

According to Yonhap news, Shin Yong-hae, Commissioner of the Korea Correctional Service, made a statement regarding the matter.

Stating that Yoon, who was arrested yesterday, was placed in a 12-square-meter single-person cell at the detention center in the capital Seoul, Shin said, "Yoon has been moved from the waiting room where suspects are held to the general detention wing."

On the other hand, Shin noted that presidential office security officials and the police have taken security measures against potential attempts by supporters to "free" Yoon.

Furthermore, police and the special investigation team have mobilized to search the presidential office and the secure building on the presidential residence compound, and to obtain evidence such as security camera footage.

"FORCED" TESTIMONY FOR YOON BEING CONSIDERED

An official from the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) stated in a press release that action will be taken to "ensure that Yoon provides testimony," as he had previously refused to testify regarding the martial law investigation.

The official said, "At this point, we are seriously considering bringing him in by force (to testify). We are also evaluating visiting the detention center for questioning."

86 PROTESTERS SUPPORTING YOON DETAINED

Reactions from supporters of Yoon, who was removed from the presidency and arrested in South Korea, continue.

The number of people detained due to protesters who support Yoon entering the Seoul Western District Court building yesterday has risen to 86.

A scuffle had broken out between police and the protesters, who were accused of "forcibly entering the building, breaking windows, and spraying fire extinguishers at security forces stationed around the building."

Approximately 44,000 people had held a demonstration in support of Yoon in front of the courthouse while the decision to arrest him was being deliberated.

YOON HAD BEEN ARRESTED

Yoon, who was removed from office after the South Korean National Assembly requested his impeachment on the grounds that the declaration of martial law was unconstitutional, was taken into custody on January 15 as part of the martial law investigation.

Investigators took Yoon into custody at the presidential residence and then brought him to the Corruption Investigation Office in Gwacheon, south of the capital Seoul.

It was reported that Yoon, who was questioned for more than 10 hours on the first day, refused to testify. Yoon, the first president in South Korean history to be taken into custody, was transferred to a detention center following the interrogation.

Following the arrest warrant issued on January 18, Yoon was arrested yesterday by the Seoul Western District Court on charges of "leading an insurrection" and "abuse of power."

The investigation launched into the martial law declaration made by Yoon on December 3, 2024, is ongoing.
