Martial law crisis in South Korea: Ruling party leader resigns

The political crisis that began with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declaring martial law on December 3 has resulted in the resignation of People Power Party (PPP) leader Han Dong-hoon. Yoon's impeachment by the parliament has led to intense debates within the ruling party.

RULING PARTY LEADER RESIGNS 

PPP leader Han Dong-hoon announced his resignation at a press conference held after the National Assembly approved the impeachment motion against Yoon. Han stated that he could no longer continue his duties in the face of pressure from the party's Supreme Council.

The impeachment motion, which the opposition submitted to the parliament by deeming Yoon's declaration of martial law illegal, was accepted with 204 votes. However, the qualified majority required for the motion's approval was achieved with the support of 12 lawmakers from the PPP in addition to the opposition bloc. This situation has fueled discussions of indiscipline within the ruling party.

REACTIONS TO MARTIAL LAW DECISION CONTINUE 

While Yoon Suk Yeol argued that he declared martial law to "combat pro-North Korean forces," the decision was viewed by the opposition and civil society as a threat to constitutional freedoms. Martial law was lifted following the parliamentary vote and Cabinet approval, but Yoon's actions have triggered a widespread political debate.

TEMPORARY CHANGE OF DUTY 

Following Yoon's temporary suspension from office, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has been appointed as acting president.
