Jean-Luc Melenchon, the presidential candidate for the leftist La France Insoumise (LFI) party in France, has alleged that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is exerting influence over electoral processes in France.
Speaking at a conference in the capital, Paris, Melenchon stated that party members would attend a meeting to be held this week by Minister of the Armed Forces Sebastien Lecornu regarding the Yellow Vests protests. Melenchon said that the risks concerning next year's presidential election would be raised at this meeting.
Arguing that the government characterizes the risks to the elections through "far-left groups," Melenchon opposed this, stating that the risk comes from elsewhere.
The risks to the elections do not stem from far-left groups, but from Netanyahu. It is Mr. Netanyahu who has an influence on the elections in Marseille, Toulouse, Roubaix, and Paris.
Previously, reports in the French press alleged that the Israeli firm BlackCore had interfered in elections by spreading disinformation regarding LFI mayoral candidates who made support for the Palestinian people a central element of their campaigns.
The French government had also initiated legal proceedings against BlackCore on suspicion of interfering in the local elections held in March. Melenchon's remarks indicated that these controversies have been brought back to the agenda ahead of next year's presidential election.
