Merz: An endless war in Iran is not in our interest

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued a written statement regarding developments centered on Iran in the Middle East. Stating that he supports the attacks by the US and Israel on Iran, the German Chancellor noted that he sees risks regarding the continuation and spread of the conflicts. Merz said, "These conflicts affect the security of Israel and our partners in the region, especially our partners in the Gulf region. They also affect Iran's state structure and territorial integrity. An endless war is not in our interest."

Merz pointed out that scenarios regarding the collapse of the Iranian state or proxy wars conducted on Iranian soil could also have far-reaching consequences for Europe, including security, energy supply, and migration. Warning that a long-term war could have uncontrollable consequences, Merz reminded that they are working on a plan to end the conflicts as Germany, France, the UK, and partners in the Gulf region.

Merz said, "We are working with our partners to build a common perspective on ending hostilities and to contribute to its implementation. The guiding principle should be a regional peace order that guarantees the security and existence of all states, including Israel and the Gulf countries. The regional conflict must be brought to an end. Following the end of the conflicts, a political process of dialogue and confidence-building should be initiated in the region."

Pointing out that Iran's military nuclear program and ballistic missile program must be verifiably terminated, Merz stated, "It must be ensured that nuclear material from Iran does not fall into the hands of non-state actors or third countries. Iran's territorial integrity must be preserved. The Iranian government must remain functional, and public order and basic services must be maintained. The Iranian economy must not collapse. Uncontrolled migration from Iran must be prevented."

Stating that "the Iranian people have the right to freely determine their own future," Merz noted that sanctions could be lifted and aid could be provided in the future, but this would only be possible if Iran fulfills the conditions he listed.
