Message from Khamenei on the US

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has made his first public assessment regarding the ongoing negotiation process with the US. Speaking at a meeting with high-level officials at his residence in the capital, Tehran, Khamenei stated that they are not hopeful about the talks, but also expressed that they are not entirely opposed to them.

"The negotiations with the US are just one of many diplomatic initiatives being conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," Khamenei said, emphasizing that the country's economic and political problems should not be tied solely to these contacts.

"PAST MISTAKES MUST NOT BE REPEATED"

The Iranian leader warned, "The strategic mistakes made during that process must not be repeated," citing the US's unilateral withdrawal in 2018 from the nuclear deal signed in 2015, known as the "JCPOA," as an example.

Expressing that the outcome of the talks with the US remains uncertain, Khamenei said, "These talks could have a positive outcome, or they could remain inconclusive. We are neither overly optimistic nor too pessimistic about the process. However, we are extremely cautious and pessimistic toward the other side."

A CLEAR MESSAGE FROM IRAN TO NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES

In his speech, Khamenei touched not only on relations with the US but also on Iran's regional policies. He stated that strengthening ties with neighboring countries and deepening economic relations in Asia and Africa should be the country's priority in foreign policy.

CURRENT STATUS OF IRAN-US NEGOTIATIONS

Bilateral relations had become strained following the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018. However, a new wave of diplomatic contact began last month. In a process initiated by former US President Donald Trump, a direct letter was sent to Iranian leader Khamenei, and Iran responded to this letter through Oman.

Following the letters, indirect negotiations were held in Oman on April 12. Both sides described these talks as "constructive and positive."

MEETING PLANNED FOR ROME MOVED BACK TO OMAN

The Italian capital, Rome, had initially been indicated for the second round of talks. However, following consultations by Iranian officials, it was decided that the parties would meet again in Oman.

With this development, all eyes are now on the second round of negotiations to be held between Iran and the US.
