Meta to review posts regarding Israel and Gaza

According to a report by The Hill, the Meta Oversight Board stated in a written announcement that two posts regarding the "recent attacks involving Israel and Gaza" are being subjected to an "expedited review."

DECISION TO BE ANNOUNCED WITHIN 30 DAYS

The statement noted that the board's review of these two posts is a first, and the decision regarding the outcome of the review will be announced within 30 days. In the statement, Meta Oversight Board Co-Chair Thomas Hughes emphasized that crisis situations are not an excuse for social media platforms to suspend their rules or resort to censorship.

AL-SHIFA HOSPITAL POST TO BE REVIEWED

The board will first examine a post uploaded to Instagram in November, which showed the wounded and deceased following an attack on the courtyard of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza. The post in question was initially removed by Meta for violating its rules, but was later restored by the board with a "disturbing content" warning screen.

HOSTAGE POST TO BE REVIEWED

The second piece of content under review is a Facebook post showing a woman pleading for her life while being taken hostage, and another male hostage being led away. This second post had previously been removed for violating Meta's rules. The board, composed of international academics and experts, operates independently of Meta and is funded by an independent trust.

The Oversight Board has the authority to overturn Meta's decisions regarding shared posts.
