Mexico files complaint against Ecuador at the International Court of Justice
Mexico has filed a complaint against Ecuador at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the raid on its embassy in Quito, requesting that the country's activities at the United Nations (UN) be suspended.
Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena stated in a press conference that Ecuador violated the fundamental principles and norms of international law with the embassy raid.
Explaining that they have requested the suspension of Ecuador's UN membership until it publicly apologizes to Mexico, Barcena said, "Despite international law, the immunity of our embassy was clearly violated. Our diplomats were attacked. Ecuador must be held accountable for its actions."
Stating that Ecuador should be given a penalty that sets a precedent, Barcena noted that it is important for the international community to clearly condemn Ecuador to ensure such raids are not repeated.
Barcena noted that they have suspended free trade agreement negotiations with Ecuador and have decided to halt commercial relations as well.
"THIS IS NOT JUST MEXICO'S ISSUE, IT IS EVERYONE'S ISSUE"
Meanwhile, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also stated in his remarks that they are working to ensure such an incident does not happen again, saying, "This is not just Mexico's issue, it is everyone's issue. International law must be guaranteed; no country's property or embassy should be harmed."
WHAT HAPPENED?
Ecuadorian police raided the Mexican Embassy in Quito, where former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas had been staying since December 2022, in order to take him into custody.
Roberto Canseco, the embassy's head of political affairs, stated to reporters that Ecuadorian police had forced their way inside and attacked the staff.
Mexican President Obrador noted that he had instructed the Foreign Minister to pursue legal action, stating, "This is a flagrant violation of international law and Mexico's sovereignty. I have given instructions for the immediate suspension of diplomatic relations with the Ecuadorian government."
