Microsoft warns of Russia, Iran, and China regarding US elections

In a statement made by Clint Watts, General Manager of the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center, it was reported that since the company's last two reports, the US government has taken many steps to uncover the cyber and influence activities of foreign adversaries regarding the elections.

The statement noted that with two weeks remaining until the presidential election, the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center has observed that Russia, Iran, and China are engaged in continuous influence efforts aimed at undermining the US's democratic processes.

The statement indicated that the cyber influence operations of Iranian actors are focused on the campaign of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, while those of Russian actors are focused on the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. It was reported that while Russian actors continue to integrate generative artificial intelligence into their content, Iranian groups have accelerated their preparations to facilitate cyber influence operations, and Chinese actors have shifted their focus to various local candidates and members of Congress.

The statement emphasized that Russian actors are specifically trying to target Harris's campaign with attacks on the candidates' characters.

Pointing out that the ability of foreign actors to rapidly spread misleading content could significantly affect public perception and election results, the statement warned voters, government agencies, candidates, and parties to be vigilant against misleading and suspicious online activities, particularly focusing on the 48 hours before and after election day.
