A military aircraft carrying Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima has gone missing. In a statement issued by the Malawi Presidency, it was stated, "Since it went off the radar, aviation authorities' efforts to make contact with the aircraft have so far failed."
It was noted that there were 9 other people on board with Chilima, and that the aircraft took off from the capital Lilongwe at 09:17 local time. Search and rescue operations for the aircraft are ongoing.
In 2022, 51-year-old Chilima was arrested and accused of corruption due to a bribery scandal involving a businessman.
The charges against Chilima, whose powers had been stripped, were dropped by the court last month.
