In Czechia, police are investigating the motive behind the attack carried out by a 24-year-old gunman at Charles University in the capital, Prague, which left 14 people dead and 25 injured.

Motive behind university attack under investigation

As police and government officials issued new statements regarding the attack that occurred yesterday at the Faculty of Arts located in Jan Palach Square in the city center, it was reported that the motive for the attack is still under investigation.

Police stated that the 24-year-old Czech national who carried out the attack, which left 14 people dead and 25 injured, came from a village near Prague and was a university student, adding that the attacker's body was later found and that he may have committed suicide.

Pointing out that the attacker's father was also found dead in his home on the same day, police assessed that the individual may have been influenced by similar past events.

THE BLOODIEST ATTACK IN RECENT HISTORY

Prime Minister Petr Fiala stated that the Cabinet has declared December 23 a national day of mourning due to the bloodiest attack in the country's recent history, and that a minute of silence will be held today at noon for those who lost their lives.

Fiala also stated that the attack was not linked to any international terrorist organization.

In the country where aid campaigns for the victims have been launched, Prime Minister Fiala expressed that the necessary financial support will be provided to the relatives of those who lost their lives and to the injured.

3 FOREIGN STUDENTS

Interior Minister Vít Rakušan also reported that the identities of 13 of the 14 victims have been determined, and it has been established that 3 of the students who lost their lives were foreign nationals.

Rakušan stated that a large number of weapons were seized at the scene and that the police's timely intervention prevented the number of casualties from increasing.
