Mount Etna in Italy becomes active again

Mount Etna, which stands at an altitude of approximately 3,300 meters on the island of Sicily, began spewing ash and lava yesterday evening.

In a statement from the Catania branch of Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), it was noted that there was a strong lava flow from the crater on the southeast side of Etna and that the ash spewed by the volcano reached a height of approximately 4,500 meters.

RED ALERT ISSUED

Reports in the Italian press noted that the lava flow from Etna could be seen from kilometers away and that a red alert was issued for aircraft passing through the region due to the volcanic activity.

It was reported that due to the ash spewed by Etna, many streets and vehicles in settlements around the volcano, such as Zafferana, were covered in ash.

Etna holds the distinction of being the highest active volcano in continental Europe.
