Music and entertainment ban in Northern Cyprus extended until September 9 following ship disaster

The music broadcast and entertainment ban implemented in Northern Cyprus following the ship disaster off the coast of Kyrenia has been extended. The Ministry of Interior announced that the ban will remain in effect until 00:00 on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

Under the decision, weddings held in wedding halls have been excluded from the scope of the ban. Outside of this, all types of music broadcasts and entertainment activities are prohibited in residences, workplaces, restaurants, cafes, bars, entertainment venues, and similar areas.

In its statement, the Ministry noted that the decision taken by the Nicosia Central District Governorate was implemented due to the maritime accident off the coast of Kyrenia, and requested that all individuals, institutions, and businesses comply with the decision with sensitivity.

The ban first began on August 31 when the Ministry of Tourism and Environment suspended music permits as part of the 3-day national mourning declared by the Council of Ministers. The Ministry of Interior later expanded the practice, citing the sorrow and sensitivity within the community, and made it applicable nationwide between September 2 and 5.

The high-speed passenger ship named "Filo Jet," which operates between Kyrenia Port and Taşucu Port in Mersin, began taking on water from its bow shortly after departing from Kyrenia on Sunday, August 30. The ship sank while attempting to return to Kyrenia Port.

Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Ünal Üstel had announced after the accident that the bodies of 12 people had been recovered and that search efforts were ongoing for 16 people. Üstel also reported that the ship's wreckage had been located at a depth of 554 meters off the coast of Kyrenia.
