NATO's new Secretary General has been announced

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has become the new Secretary General of NATO. Rutte will replace Jens Stoltenberg.

Rutte's appointment was made official today after his only rival for the position, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, announced his withdrawal from the race last week.

Former NATO leader Stoltenberg praised his successor, Rutte, as a "true Transatlanticist, a strong leader, and a consensus builder."

ERDOĞAN HAD ANNOUNCED HIS SUPPORT

Following Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte's meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Istanbul on April 26, 2024, to request support for the NATO Secretary General position, Turkey informed NATO members today that it would support Rutte.

Dutch Prime Minister Rutte had stated, "Turkey plays a decisive role. In doing so, it is making efforts to resolve the situation in Gaza. At the same time, it has efforts regarding this terrible war in Ukraine. In that respect, you are playing an important role."
