Neighbor is changing its capital
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has proposed moving the capital to a city in the south due to the increasing effects of the water crisis in the capital, Tehran.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the country's capital needs to be changed due to the deepening water crisis and land subsidence in the capital, Tehran. Pezeshkian announced that he has submitted his proposal to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
WATER CRISIS AND LAND SUBSIDENCE ARE INCREASING THEIR IMPACT
Pezeshkian stated that the water crisis in the cities of Tehran, Karaj, and Qazvin is too large to be solved with simple interventions. Experts point out the need for a more comprehensive strategy to solve these problems in the capital.
WATER CONSUMPTION AND PRECIPITATION ARE DECREASING IN TEHRAN
Tehran consumes approximately 25 percent of Iran's water resources. With a population of 10 million, the capital is under great pressure in terms of water consumption. While dams in Tehran are an important source for meeting the city's water needs, groundwater is also used to supplement this demand. However, the 60 percent decrease in precipitation across the country in recent years has deepened the water crisis in the capital.
CAPITAL SINCE 1785
Tehran was captured by Agha Mohammad Khan, the founder of the Qajar Dynasty, in 1785 and was declared the capital in 1788. The city, which has developed rapidly since that date, continues to be the capital of Iran.
