Netanyahu comments on F-35 sale to Turkey: Argues it would disrupt the balance of power in the Middle East

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced his opposition to a potential sale of F-35s to Turkey, following statements by US President Donald Trump regarding CAATSA sanctions and the possibility of such a sale.

Speaking to the US-based CNN, Netanyahu argued that providing F-35s—considered one of the most advanced fighter jets—to Turkey would not make Ankara a "friendly country" from the perspective of the US.

In his assessment to CNN anchor Dana Bash, Netanyahu used the phrase "not exactly an exemplary ally for the US" when referring to Turkey. Criticizing Ankara's stance, the Israeli Prime Minister said, "It threatens to destroy my country, the only Jewish state in the world."

Claiming that a potential sale would have regional consequences, Netanyahu stated, "This is not a force that provides peace and stability. When you give them this power, you will see aggression follow."

Netanyahu also said he had directly conveyed his opposition to the F-35 sale to Turkey to Trump. The Israeli Prime Minister argued that such a move would "destroy the balance of power in the Middle East."

Pointing to Trump's decision-making authority, Netanyahu said, "Trump is the President of the US; he does what is good for the US. I am the Prime Minister of Israel; I do what is important for Israel. Most of the time, these are the same thing."

Turkey's F-35 program and CAATSA sanctions remain a long-standing subject of debate in Ankara-Washington relations. Netanyahu's statements have been recorded as an explicit objection to the potential sale from the Israeli side.
