Netanyahu in court over corruption allegations: Faces up to 10 years in prison

Standing trial in a corruption case brought against him, Netanyahu appeared in court on charges of 'bribery, breach of trust, and abuse of office.' During the hearing, the Israeli Prime Minister denied the allegations leveled against him, labeling the case as 'fabricated' and 'absurd.' Describing the trial as a 'living hell,' Netanyahu claimed that the prosecutor was pursuing corruption allegations for political reasons.

Tensions flared between Netanyahu's lawyer and the prosecutor during the hearing. Netanyahu described the situation by saying, 'I have been dragged through this hell for 8 years.' Netanyahu had previously been criticized for failing to attend earlier hearings. The Prime Minister had missed hearings in the past citing reasons such as surgery, diplomatic visits, and security matters.

According to a report by the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, a case was filed against Netanyahu in 2019 by Israeli Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit in three separate files on charges of bribery, breach of trust, and abuse of office. The case alleges that Netanyahu provided financial concessions to the telecommunications company Bezeq in exchange for positive coverage about himself. It is also alleged that he received valuable gifts from Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan and Australian billionaire James Packer.

DID HE INTERFERE WITH NEWSPAPERS?

Netanyahu arrived late to the hearing due to a security matter that required his attention. Denying all charges, Netanyahu claimed he was innocent. It was announced that hearings would be held three times a week as the trial continues. The indictment states that there is sufficient evidence that the gifts were given to Netanyahu in exchange for political favors.

On the other hand, the indictment notes that Netanyahu and Arnon Mozes, the owner of the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, reached an agreement for the newspaper's editorial policy to favor the Likud party. According to the agreement, Netanyahu pursued legal regulations aimed at reducing the competitive power of Israel Hayom, a rival to Yedioth Ahronoth.

If found guilty at the end of the trial, Netanyahu could face up to 10 years in prison. Netanyahu, the first prime minister in Israeli history to be tried while in office, has characterized the process as a political conspiracy.
