Netflix to refund seven years of price hikes

In a case heard in Rome, Italy, the price increases implemented by the digital streaming platform Netflix between 2017 and 2024 were found to be unlawful. As a result of the court ruling, the platform will be required to refund subscription price hikes from that period.

The legal process, initiated by the Rome-based consumer rights group Movimento Consumatori, grew following complaints from approximately 25 thousand Netflix customers. The organization's president, Alessandro Mostaccio, announced that thousands of subscribers affected by the platform's price hikes in recent years had reached out to them.

Following the decision, Netflix will be obligated to issue mass refunds to its subscribers. Additionally, affected customers will be sent notifications regarding the reimbursement process.

According to calculations by consumer lawyers, Premium subscribers could receive refunds reaching approximately 500 euros, while Standard plan users could receive up to 250 euros.

In a statement released by the company, it was noted, "We always prioritize consumer rights and believe that we have set our platform terms in accordance with Italian law," and it was announced that the court decision would be appealed.
