New crisis in the Strait of Hormuz: Veto move from China and Russia!

The international crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has reached a new dimension. A draft resolution submitted to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) at the initiative of Bahrain, which aimed to safely resume ship transits in the region where maritime traffic has been disrupted due to the war, was unexpectedly rejected. Statements made after the vote have increased tensions.

SHARP CRITICISM OF THE DRAFT FROM CHINA

China's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Fu Cong, said in a statement to reporters after the decision, "We do not believe this draft is balanced. The draft does not address the root causes of the problem. It blames only Iran with an extremely biased attitude." Fu also recalled the ongoing ceasefire talks between the US and Iran, stating that they did not find the timing of the draft, presented during such a period, to be appropriate. The Ambassador added, "Considering all the background, we are of the opinion that it would be extremely dangerous for the Security Council to adopt such a draft."

VETO FROM RUSSIA AND CHINA

Although the draft resolution received the support of 11 countries in the Security Council vote, it was not adopted due to the use of veto power by permanent members China and Russia. Pakistan and Colombia abstained from the vote. The initiative came amidst tensions following military attacks by the US and Israel against Iran.

The controversial draft aimed to ensure the free movement of commercial and military vessels in the Strait. However, China and Russia announced their critical veto decision, arguing that the text unilaterally holds Iran responsible and does not contain assessments regarding the root of the crisis.

With these latest developments, tensions in the region are expected to rise further.
