New development in US plane-helicopter collision
US Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) reported that the military helicopter involved in a collision with a plane near Washington on January 29 was found to have its surveillance system, known as ADS-B, which automatically shares flight information, turned off.
Cruz made a statement to the press after receiving a briefing on the matter.
Stating that the military helicopter was conducting a training mission, Cruz pointed out that there was no justification for turning off the surveillance system for security reasons.
Expressing that the military helicopter had a device that sends a specific coded signal when queried by a ground-based radar system, Cruz noted that while it was visible on radar, the surveillance system known as ADS-B is more reliable and precise.
Cruz noted that it was determined that the surveillance system of the military helicopter that collided with a plane in the US on January 29 was turned off.
The surveillance system known as ADS-B automatically broadcasts flight information such as the location, speed, and altitude of aircraft. It is known to be more precise than traditional systems.
