New government formed in France

A new government has been formed in France after 2.5 months of uncertainty. The announcement was made by the Elysee Palace, 2.5 months after the elections that left the National Assembly hung and deepened political divisions within the country.

The statement indicated that the government was formed by former European Union (EU) Brexit Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier, whom Macron appointed as prime minister instead of the candidate from the left-wing alliance that emerged first from the polls.

The statement noted that in the 39-member cabinet, 33-year-old Antoine Armand will serve as Minister of Finance, while Jean-Noel Barrot will become Minister of Foreign Affairs. It was also reported that French Minister of Defense Sebastien Lecornu will continue in his post.

MACRON'S DECISION ON BARNIER

The New Popular Front, which finished first in the second round of elections held in France on July 7, had nominated Lucie Castets as its candidate for prime minister.

Macron had stated that it was not possible for Castets to receive a vote of confidence in the National Assembly and had refused to appoint her as prime minister.

On September 5, Macron had decided to appoint Michel Barnier from the center-right The Republicans (LR) party as Prime Minister.

Following his selection as prime minister, Michel Barnier stated that he was open to forming a government that included politicians from all sides, including left-wing politicians. Barnier's premiership sparked protests in the country.
