New migrant crisis in the UK

The UK's highest judicial body, the Supreme Court, has announced that it finds the British government's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda unlawful.

Following this court ruling, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak held a press conference and announced that he would not abandon the plan.

Sunak began his remarks by stating that he did not agree with the Supreme Court's decision but that he "accepted and respected" it.

However, he stated that as Prime Minister, the government would reach a new agreement with Rwanda and overcome this issue by enacting emergency legislation.

Sunak did not stop there, announcing that after this legislation is passed, he would not allow the European Court of Human Rights to block the Rwanda flights.

In its statement today, the Supreme Court had declared that Rwanda is not a safe third country, stating, "Accordingly, unless and until the deficiencies in the asylum processes are corrected, the removal of asylum seekers to Rwanda would be unlawful under section 6 of the Human Rights Act 1998. This is because it would be a breach of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibits torture, inhuman or degrading treatment."

SUNAK CRITICIZED THE DECISION

In his speech, Sunak declared that he would not recognize the Supreme Court's decision, saying, "Today, I am announcing that we will take the extraordinary step of introducing 'emergency' legislation. This will enable Parliament to confirm that with our new treaty, Rwanda is safe. This will ensure that people cannot further delay flights by creating systematic challenges in our domestic courts."

The Prime Minister stated that he would not recognize the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights either, saying, "We may still face challenges from the European Court of Human Rights. Let us reconsider international relations to remove the obstacles in our path. Now, let me say this to everyone; I will not allow a foreign court to block these flights."

The British Prime Minister further underscored his determination to send migrants to Rwanda, stating, "If the European Court of Human Rights chooses to intervene against the clear wishes of Parliament, I will not take the easy way out! I am prepared to do whatever it takes. Under binding international law, Rwanda is considered a safe country."
