It has been determined that a bacterial infection of unknown origin has been seen in all but two of Japan's 47 prefectures. While attention is drawn to the infection's similarity to Covid-19, one in three people over the age of 65 diagnosed with the infection has lost their life.
A new Covid-19-like infection has begun to spread rapidly in Japan.
According to a report in T24, authorities reported 378 cases in the first two months of 2024, and infection cases have been detected in all but two of Japan's 47 prefectures.
Experts stated that the outbreak shows similarities to Covid-19 and that one-third of those diagnosed under the age of 65 have lost their lives.
"WE NEED TO BRING IT UNDER CONTROL IMMEDIATELY"
Speaking to the Guardian, Tokyo Women's Medical University infectious disease expert Ken Kikuchi stated that they are concerned about the dramatic increase in the number of patients with severe invasive streptococcal infections this year, saying, "More than 50 percent of the Japanese population has been infected with Covid-19. The immune status of people after recovering from Covid-19 may alter their susceptibility to some microorganisms. We need to clarify the infection cycle of severe invasive streptococcal pyogenes diseases and bring them under control immediately."
Information was shared that the case causes severe sore throat, especially in children.
