New Prime Minister appoints his partner as 'Minister'!
France's new Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, has appointed his partner, Stéphane Séjourné, with whom he has been in a relationship since 2017, as the 'Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs'.
The cabinet formed by Gabriel Attal, who was appointed as the Prime Minister of France, has been announced.
Attal, who formed the new cabinet, appointed Stéphane Séjourné—his partner since 2017, a member of the European Parliament (EP), and the leader of President Emmanuel Macron's Renaissance party—as the "Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs".
Making a statement on his social media account regarding the appointment, Séjourné said the following:
* Upon the proposal of the Prime Minister, I have been appointed as the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs by the President.
* I am aware of what a great honor this is. This is something tremendous. It will be my duty to carry our country's unique voice to the world.
ATTAL'S NEW CABINET
Alexis Kohler, Secretary-General of the Élysée Palace, announced the new cabinet at the presidential residence. Catherine Vautrin, who served as a member of parliament and deputy speaker of the assembly in the Republicans (LR) Party between 2008 and 2017, became the Minister of Labor, Health, and Solidarity.
Marie Lebec, a member of parliament for the ruling Renaissance party, was appointed as the Minister for Relations with Parliament. Rachida Dati, the Mayor of the 7th arrondissement of Paris from the Republicans (LR) party, was brought to the head of the Ministry of Culture. Dati had previously served as Minister of Justice during the term of former President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Prisca Thevenot, Minister of State for Youth, was assigned as the Minister for Democratic Renewal and Government Spokesperson. A change of duty was made for the Minister of Solidarity and Families, Aurore Bergé. Bergé will now serve as the Minister for Gender Equality.
The scope of work for Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, who was the Minister of Sports in the previous cabinet, has been expanded. Oudéa-Castéra will now assume the role of Minister of Education, Youth, Sports, and the Olympic Games.
Among the names continuing their duties in the cabinet are Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Justice Éric Dupond-Moretti, Minister of Defense Sébastien Lecornu, Minister of Agriculture Marc Fesneau, Minister of Ecological Transition Christophe Béchu, and Minister of Higher Education and Research Sylvie Retailleau.
The first Council of Ministers meeting of the new cabinet will be held tomorrow morning at 11:00 local time.
WHO IS GABRIEL ATTAL?
Starting his duty as the country's youngest prime minister, 34-year-old Attal was born in 1989 in the city of Clamart in northern France. A graduate of Sciences Po Paris, one of France's most prestigious schools, Attal took his first steps into political life in 2006 as a member of the Socialist Party (PS).
Attal was among the first names to support Macron before he assumed the presidency.
Prime Minister Attal held many positions during Macron's presidency, including member of parliament, government spokesperson, and minister of education.
Attal, who is among the politicians close to the president, had sparked controversy when he banned the wearing of the abaya in public schools while he was minister of education, on the grounds that it was contrary to secularism.
The "abaya ban" decision taken in the country on August 27, 2023, was taken to the Council of State on the grounds that it violated rights and freedoms, and the Council of State ruled that the ban "did not violate the rights to respect for private life, worship, and education."
