New record in hot dog eating contest: 83 sandwiches in 10 minutes
In a hot dog eating contest held in Las Vegas, Joey Chestnut set a new world record by eating 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Chestnut, who won the competition with a $100,000 prize, broke his own previous record of 76 sandwiches.
Joey Chestnut won the hot dog eating contest by consuming 83 in 10 minutes, setting a new world record.
An unforgettable duel took place on Sunday in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States.
40-year-old U.S. citizen Joey Chestnut, known for eating a large number of hot dogs in a short time, faced off against his 6-year-older Japanese rival Takeru Kobayashi.
According to the report in Independent Türkçe, in the competition held at the Hyper X Arena, the 1.85-meter-tall American ate 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes, while his 1.73-meter-tall rival finished with 66. While it was initially announced that Kobayashi had reached 67, one point was later deducted from his total score due to leftover pieces.
HE BROKE HIS OWN RECORD AND TOOK THE $100,000
Joey Chestnut thus significantly improved his own record of eating 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes, which he set in 2022, and also won the $100,000 prize.
The American commented on the record he broke as follows:
"It's great, I've been trying to eat 80 hot dogs for years. I never could have done this without Kobayashi. He pushes me. We haven't always been on good terms, but I love seeing how we push each other to be our best."
Kobayashi, who has been participating in similar competitions since 2001, said, "I did my best," and announced his retirement.
WON THE COMPETITION 16 TIMES
The duel, broadcast live on Netflix under the title "Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef," had been anticipated for 15 years. The pair last faced off in 2009 at Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, where Chestnut defeated Kobayashi in the final.
Chestnut has won 16 of these annual competitions held in the U.S., while Kobayashi has 6 championships.
In this competition, unlike Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, separating the hot dogs from the buns or dipping the sandwiches in water was not permitted.
Chestnut, seen as the top figure in hot dog eating, stated that these rules initially worried him, but he later got used to them.
